The figurine depicts a knight - a crusader from the Order of Hospitallers.

The order was founded in the Middle East in the wake of the first crusades. It played a significant role in European history, mainly due to its once important military potential and excellent naval fleet. The Hospitallers also made enormous contributions to the organization and running of the first medieval hospitals on the European continent. Today it is known as the Order of Malta.

The order is recognized by a number of states as a sovereign subject of international law. Its properties: two in Rome and one in Malta, have extraterritorial status. The order is a party to international agreements, maintains diplomatic relations, and participates in diplomatic life.

The order issues its own postage stamps and its own registration plates for official vehicles (with the code SMOM); it also has its own currency, the scudo (1 scudo = 12 tari = 240 grani = 1440 piccoli).
